Esther has just spoken to Ali in Cusco and I've been reading in the paper, the locals are still causing trouble on the train line from the city to Machu Picchu. This is having a terrible effect on tourism and takings in the cafe have gone through the floor. Armed police are travelling on the trains now to try to stop the protestors from blocking the line. They believe that the railway should be run by a local company not Perurail. In an ideal world that may be a great idea but the standard of customer care tourists get from businesses run by Cusqueños leads me to think that they would make a pretty bad job of that too. It would be far better if they concentrated on making sure tourists have a good experience in Peru rather than sit in their hotels waiting to ride shotgun to Machu Picchu. Things are not going well here so far, I hope our trip to Tumbes can relax us a bit.
