Just as Esther was drying Salvador off after his bath, a massive thunderstorm lurched over Cusco. We haven't had this violent a storm for quite a while and this one certainly gave it all it had got. Huge bangs and crashes which always sound much louder this high up anyway and loads of lightning made for an interesting half an hour which terminated with a massive explosion and a fork of lightning that lit the whole house up. Then we were plunged into darkness as the electrics all went off. Looking up at the hills around Cusco, the whole city had been unplugged by the storm. Ali rang straight away to say that they were going over to the emergency lighting system (candles) in the cafe and to ask if we were alright. Five minutes later the electric came back on in the old centre of Cusco but not in the newer areas up on the hills. A few days of hot sunshine during the day nearly always ends with a storm but not often one as powerful as this.
