Last night after our dose of downstairs domestic we watched 'Grizzly Man' a documentary film about Timothy Treadwell and his obsession with Grizzly Bears in Alaska. For 13 years he lived with the bears and videoed himself and them in just about every kind of situation. He seemed to think that during this time he had created some sort of connection with these wild animals and gave them all names. In the end he and his girlfriend were eaten by a bear, oddly enough one which didn't have a name. The film showed that the wild is the wild and animals, no matter how fascinating and loveable they may seem are just looking for their next meal, in this case a failed actor and recovering alcoholic. The story confirmed to me what I've always thought about TV wildlife programmes that give animals names, that they create a connection that just isn't there, I'd prefer to enjoy their wild beauty than wait for the moment when naughty Fred the Lion inevitably takes a chunk out of Clarence the Zebra. Makes me think of the bit in Madagascar when the Lion becomes wild. Anyway, Grizzly Man is highly recommended even though Esther didn't like it, I think he was a bit too much of an over the top looney for her, which of course he was.
