Tonight we went for a curry at the new restaurant that has opened just down the road from Moni in San Agustin. Owned by Indians, expectations were high, particularly from me as I was champing at the bit for an authentic curry. We went with Jane and some of her friends and took Salvador along too for one of his special late nights. It was obvious that the restaurant was ill prepared for customers as the owner gave us the menus then proceeded to tell us what he was going to serve us. Anything else we asked for was 'off' - Paneer - NO - Mango Lassi - NO - Mango Chutney - NO - Pilao Rice - 'you really would prefer plain rice' and then he insisted on serving lamb to the others even though they told him they didn't like it. Service was slow and fearful and the food itself not much to get excited about. He even told us that between courses he 'prefers a ten minute rest' so we had to fall in line with his eating habits. I spent most of the time stifling sniggers as the 'Fawlty Towers' scenario unfolded. The 'Pilao' Rice arrived after we had finished the curry and was obviously boiled rice dipped in turmeric. Salvador though, was an absolute dream, playing with Jack and generally having a great time. I went expecting 'Monsoon' or 'the Jewel in the Crown' and got a downmarket 'Khyber', what a disappointment, looks like I will have to carry on making my own curries.
