The inevitable effects of political instability and an uncertain future have started to kick in.
The Nuevo Sol has been steadily losing ground against the Dollar, the stock market is on the slide and now prices have started to go up. Purchase of basic items get hit with increases first, but this being Peru things are not that simple. There is also a supply problem with sugar which means that not only has the price doubled, getting hold of it can be quite a bizarre experience. The shops that sell sugar are now insisting that customers buy another (slow moving and undesirable) product. So with a bag of sugar now comes a bar of carbolic soap or a packet of dried soup. Perhaps this innovation could replace 'Buy one get one free' in Tesco's, 'Buy one, pay for two, including one that you don't want', has quite a ring to it.
