Esther and I went to the last night of Jarvis Cocker's Meltdown at the Royal Festival Hall yesterday.
The support act was a fabulous masterpiece of weirdness that sparked a mass exodus to the bar on the scale of The Fall scaring the African musos at WOMAD in 1985.
We stayed of course and watched the whole marvelous speactacle.
A band from Philedelphia conjuring a live soundtrack to an obscure 1970 film ....
When you're planning a challenging bit of entertainment there are always some essentials to look for.
Scary Vampire Teeth - Check
Music from the bottomless pit of plodding, banging and crashing - Check
Nubile teenagers being pierced by Scary Vampire Teeth - Check
Make sure its foreign - Czech
The sound of 3000 jaws dropping can't be fully reproduced here, but the website will give you a idea.
Jarvis himself was on fantastic form and encored with a superb version of 'Eye of the Tiger' which got Esther dancing.
Afterwards Esther spied Jarv watching the Sheffield band Artery in the foyer (think I saw them in 1982 at Futurama 4 but walked into a lampost that weekend so can't recall) and asked him for his autograph .... 'Careful with splinters - Jarvis' reads his dedication ....
