Patience is a virtue, it is also a card game and the first name of Ms. Strong, she of the flowery greetings cards.
In Peru patience is a way of life.
Particularly when dealing with the local Spanish owned telecommunications company Telefonica.
Last Wednesday we organised a phone line, cable TV and broadband.
After being told the broadband would be three days, we rang on Saturday to find out when they intended to install it.
What broadband? they answered and I had to repeat the order by phone. Having three close typed pages of A4 terms and conditions read to me over the phone was a new and particularly unrewarding experience.
We were assured that Monday would be the day.
Monday came and went.
Esther rang Telefonica this morning to be told it would be next Friday or Monday.
As we are in Lima from next Saturday neither date made much sense, so we told them to postpone the installation until we come back after Christmas.
Lo and behold with the chance to bill us in December fading fast, minutes later I received a call from an engineer saying he was on his way.
He duly arrived, laden with tools and wearing a hard hat which he only took off after an hour of feeding cable through the house.
Two hours into the installation everything seemed to be going well until the ‘Peru is two countries’ problem kicked in.
Apparently the technicians in Lima hadn’t configured our phone line for broadband.
Cusco really is the ‘Inca Republic Of Cusco’ an independent state that doesn’t give a shit about Lima and the rest of Peru and never tires of telling anyone within earshot so. (Wife being from Lima has an influence in that statement but nonetheless it’s true).
Cue sucking of air through teeth and much shrugging. After a couple of calls to Lima the engineer left at pm saying he would be back …. ominously ‘after 3’ - this type of precision truly is a test of the patience I have left.
It is now 7.05pm and no sign of my hard hatted engineer.
The name of Telefonica’s broadband – Speedy, the recent purchaser of O2 mobile phones in the UK – Telefonica, brace yourselves.
